The work of Elias Marren — interiors held in soft light, landscapes walked slowly, and the faces of the people who sit still long enough to be seen.

A small, changing selection. For a full catalogue or studio visit, please write.

About
Elias Marren (b. 1979, Porto) paints from a converted top-floor studio in Alfama. His practice is unhurried: a single canvas may sit on the easel for months, watched, scraped back, and begun again.
He studied at ESAD Matosinhos and the Royal Drawing School in London. His work is held in private collections in Lisbon, Berlin, and New York.
“I am not trying to catch the thing. I am trying to sit with it long enough that it forgets I am there.”
Method
Weeks of looking before any paint. Notes, walks, and the room at four different hours.
Small oil studies on gessoed paper. The composition is decided here, never on the final canvas.
Thin underpainting, then months of glazes and impasto. The surface is built, not applied.
